Yuliang
Dam
Yuliang Dam at suburb of Shexian County is
the unique well-preserved overflow stone dam
in China. It was built by laying well fitted
granite stones to tame the river. Yuliang
dam is the oldest and largest-scale river
dam in ancient times with more than 600 years’
history. The dam span across Longjinshan Hill
on the south and
the commercial street of Yuliang ancient town
in the north. The old street of Yuliang ancient
town is well preserved, characterized by the
typical Huizhou-style architecture, where
you can have stroll by almost hundred of shops
selling local products and snacks from residential
households along the lane. During Ming and
Qing dynasties, the locals took advantage
of river transportation with the out side
world, such as Hangzhou and Yangtze delta
region. They traded their local timbers, or
logs and other local products, such as tea,
dried bamboo products for industrial products,
such as cloth, nails, salt and other daily
materials from the outside of the world. People
build the dam so as to raise the water level
so as to transport the cargo to the up-reaches
of the river as there was no and highway at
local for more 1000 years. Larger boats from
Hangzhou
came at below part the dam, the cargo was
downloaded and delivered by shoulder to the
upper level of the dam and got uploaded to
a smaller boat so as to transported to remote
up-reach region of river. The hustle and bustle
trade evolved at the dam for hundreds of year,
which witnessed the great changes of local
economic development. Now the Yuliang Dam
has become a must program for overseas tourists
to tour over Huangshan areas.
